Biography of Major General Ruhul Alam Chowdhury ndu, psc (Retired)


Major General Ruhul Alam Chowdhury, ndu, psc (Retired) is currently the advisor to Chairperson of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Begam Khaleda Zia. He also holds the post of Chairman & Managing Director, Armada Limited, which is involved in business in the field of Export, Import, Indenting, Trading and Project Consultancy.

He hails from a renowned Zaminder family of Cox's Bazar District and was born on 24 August 1947 at Mognama, Pekua. He is married to REHANA and having two children, a son AMER who lives abroad and a daughter ASIA who is presently Principal, Chittagong Grammar School, Dhaka.

He was an advisor to the Non-party Neutral Caretaker Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh from 2006 to 2007. As member of the council, he was in charge of Ministry of Communication, Ministry of power and energy, Ministry of Mine and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Food and Disaster Management, Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracks Affairs. Apart from these, he also advised the Chief Advisor on Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Home Affairs.

He served Pakistan and Bangladesh Army for 32 Years. He was trained and commissioned as an officer from the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA), Kakul in 1966 in Armored Corp. On return to Bangladesh after independence in 1972, he served the Bangladesh Army in several key positions before retiring in 1998. He has tremendous contribution in raisings and gradual expansion of the Armored Corps of Bangladesh Army. He raised and commanded the senior most armored regiment the “Bengal Cavalry" and the "Armored Corps School and Centre". Apart from these, he was the first Director of Armored Corps at the Army headquarters. As Master General of Ordnance, he successfully carried out defense procurement of more than 16m USD in two years of his tenure.

He has successfully undertaken the following foreign training apart from various in country trainings during his time in the Army:
1991 - National Defense University (ndu); Beijing, People’s Republic of China
1980 - Defense Services Command & Staff College (psc), Dhaka, Bangladesh
1978 - Armoured Officers’ Advanced Course (AOAC), Fort Knox, USA

- Director Operations & Planning, Armed Forces Division, Prime Minister’s Office, Dhaka
- Brigade Commander, 93 Armoured Brigade, Bogra
- Defense Advisor, Bangladesh Embassy, Yangon, Myanmar
- Director Intelligence Branch, Directorate General Forces of Intelligence (DGFI), Dhaka
- Director Armoured Corps, Army Headquarters, Dhaka
- Director Operations & Training, Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), Dhaka
- Commandant – Armoured Corps Center & School, Bogra
- General Staff Officer (Operations), Grade-1, HQ 24 Infantry Division, Chittagong.
